Robux (formerly denoted by R$ until 2019, and stylised as ROBUX, until 2017) is the virtual currency used in Roblox. Robux was added on May 14, 2007, and was one of two currencies on the platform alongside Tix. The Robux name was conceived by Shedletsky, being a portmanteau on "Roblox" and "Bux" (Bucks).^[1]

Robux is known as Roblox's primary currency by the community and staff; currently all paid items on the platform are sold for Robux, including user-created content such as microtransactions and passes, with the exception of plugins, which are sold in US Dollars (irrespective of countries/regions).

Robux is the virtual currency used on Roblox to buy avatar items, game passes, and access premium content. Players can purchase Robux with real money, or earn it by developing games and selling in-game items. Managing Robux wisely enhances gameplay and customization options.

Robux has been intertwined with meme culture as well. Memes based on a virtual currency typically mock Robux (as well as other in-game currencies, such as Fortnite's V-Bucks and Minecraft's Minecoins.) It is used both inside and outside of Roblox culture due to its state as an iconic virtual currency. An example is the Bobux meme that had been famous back in late 2020.

On November 21, 2019, the former R$ symbol was replaced with a golden rounded hexagonal lugnut shape. The usage of the former "R$" abbreviation was also discouraged by Roblox after the icon replacement, most likely because an actual currency, the Brazilian real, uses the same abbreviation.

Earning Robux

Roblox released the ability to purchase Robux through its website on September 26, 2008.^[2] The ability to purchase Robux through the Roblox Mobile App was released on December 11, 2012.^[3] Robux can also be purchased through a Roblox Gift Card, which can be purchased at many stores worldwide physically and online. Users with an active Premium membership will receive an additional Robux bonus if they purchase Robux. Users who did not own a credit card could use Rixty, which allowed them to purchase gift cards and use Coinstar machines to change the spare change into Robux. However, this option has been discontinued.

Premium

Roblox Premium provides members with an amount of Robux each month depending on the membership they purchased. It was originally called Builders Club, but that name proved to be confusing for players and it was changed. Each tier is named after how much monthly Robux is given:

• Roblox Premium 450 (US$4.99 or £4.59/month or €5.99/month)
• Roblox Premium 1,000 (US$9.99 or £8.99/month or €11.99/month)
• Roblox Premium 2,200 (US$19.99 or £18.49/month or €23.99/month)

Being a Premium member has many varieties of benefits:

• 10% more Robux when purchasing Robux
• Have the ability to sell limited items
• Access to the Trade System

• Benefits in some games are optionally added by developers; officially referred to as Premium Benefits.

Premium Payouts

Every user can earn Robux through Premium Payouts if Premium subscribers are playing their game. The amount given depends on how many people play the game and for how long.

Sale of Goods

Every user can sell developer products and passes to earn a revenue of 70% of the price after marketplace fees are deducted. Users can also sell Classic shirts, Classic pants, and Classic T-shirts for a 10 Robux fee. Premium subscribers can list their limited items and plugins for sale.

Group Funds

A group can sell items on Roblox, however, all Robux earned is deposited into the group's Group Funds which can then be distributed among members. Group funds can only be given out by the owner of the group. Group Funds can only be given to users if they have been in the group for longer than 28 days.

Trading

Only Premium subscribers (and Builders Club subscribers before it was replaced) can trade limited items and Robux with other users.

Donation Games

It is possible to join donation games to get Robux, although this method requires donations from other users, and generally does not provide any benefit to the users who are donating.

Microsoft Rewards

Microsoft Rewards was introduced on December 28, 2020. It allows users to use points earned in Microsoft Rewards to exchange for Robux. Every 1500 points are worth 100 Robux, however Roblox removed the 100 and 200 Robux due to its discontinuation.

History

• Previously, users located in the United States, Canada or the UK with a valid phone number could create a Microsoft account and earn points to redeem Robux at a rate of 100 Robux per 1,500 points.^[4]

• The offer was initially introduced on December 28, 2020, and rewarded each new account in the U.S. 100 Robux for free.^[5] However, this was discontinued a day later due to its high popularity which caused Microsoft to run out of Robux redeem codes.^[6] The Robux offer was fully removed on July 25, 2021.

• The offer was later reintroduced on January 12, 2021, allowing the player to trade 1,500 points for 100 Robux, 3,000 points for 200 Robux, and 6,000 points for 400 Robux.^[7] A day later, the 200 and 400 Robux options were removed for unknown reasons, leaving only the 100 Robux option available.^[8] The offer ended on January 15, 2021.
  • The offer was re-enabled on February 9, 2021. This offer initially had the same requirements as the prior offer in January.^[9]
  • On February 18, 2021, two more options were added, which required users to attain 12,000 Reward Points to claim a redeem code for 800 Robux and 15,000 Reward Points for 1,000 Robux.^[10]
  • On April 21, 2021, the 200 Robux option was removed from the offer. However, on April 27, 2021, it was added back.
  • The Robux offer was removed on July 25, 2021, for all options.
  • On September 14, 2021, the Robux offer was reintroduced but only in the U.S. It was removed 10 days later on September 24, 2021.
  • On October 11, 2021, the Robux offer was reintroduced again.
  • On December 3, 2021, a sweepstake entry (only in the United States) in which if someone were to join it, they would acquire one million Robux. You can get entries by getting points. The sweepstakes ended on 1/15/22.
  • On December 7, 2021, an accessory Upside Down Elf, was added as a virtual item in Microsoft Rewards.
  • On January 13, 2021, the 200 and 400 were removed, leaving the 100 Robux option available (only in the United States). Eventually, the Robux offer was completely removed on January 15 at 12 PM PT in all countries.
  • As of January 31 2022, Roblox players are allowed to redeem codes with reward points.
  • On August 5 2022, Microsoft Rewards expanded to many more countries^[11].
  • On September 5, 2022, non-800 Robux options were removed from the offer, but all options were introduced again.
  • On February 7, 2023, the 100 Robux option was removed from the offer.
  • On February 11, 2023, non-200 Robux options were removed from the offer, but all options were introduced again.
  • On April 30, 2023, all other options under 800 Robux have been removed from the offer. The 800 Robux option was also removed a few days later, leaving 1,000 Robux the only remaining option, but all options were introduced again after almost 2 months.
  • On June 30, 2023, after almost 2 weeks of the gift card re-introduced again, the 100 Robux option was removed from the offer permanently.
  • In October 2023, all Robux options (except 100 Robux, which was removed permanently) were added globally.
  • On September 6, 2025, all remaining options had their prices increased.
    • 400 Robux went up from 6,000 points to 6,750 points.^[12]
    • 800 Robux went up from 12,000 points to 13,000 points.^[13]
    • 1,000 Robux went up from 15,000 points to 16,250 points.^[14]
  • On April 8, 2026, the offer was removed for all options.
  • On May 14, 2026, it was discovered that the offer wasn't actually removed. It has been hidden from the redeem section, and can still be found at this link, however only the 1000 robux option is "in stock", with 800 being "out of stock" and 400 being removed.

Former methods

All users earned 10 Tix daily as a log-in reward and 1 Ticket per place visit.^[15]

Before August 2019, Builders Club, Turbo Builders Club and Outrageous Builders Club subscribers also received a daily Robux stipend:

• Builders Club members earned 15 (19 cents USD) Robux per day.
• Turbo Builders Club members earned 35 (44 cents USD) Robux per day.
• Outrageous Builders Club members earned 60 (75 cents USD) Robux per day.
• Users could also convert Tix into Robux using the trade menu. Contrary to popular belief, it was not at a fixed rate. 10 Tix was equal to 1 Robux initially and hovered around 14-17 Tix for 1 Robux toward the end of the Trade Currency app.

Refunds

In September 2021, Roblox added a refund policy, which allows users to get refunds for Robux. If the user had an item that was moderated and deleted by Roblox from the original user who made that item, they would first get a message from Roblox that they have an item that was moderated. Then, they would give you an agreement if that user wanted a refund or not. If they agreed, they would wait 7-14 business days for the refund to go into effect.^[16] After everything was confirmed, Roblox would message the user saying that they gave them the amount of Robux received from the moderated item.

Robux prices

For users located outside of the United States, prices are displayed as their country's currency equivalents (however exchange rates are not fully taken into account by Roblox when buying directly from the website).

Red-shaded options means they have been removed and cannot be used by any means. Users with Roblox Premium receive a 10% Robux purchase bonus. Since November 2024, purchasing a Roblox gift card or Robux on a computer and/or on the website will give up to 25% more Robux compared to mobile purchases due to app store fees.^[17]

There are many items and features users can spend Robux on.

Experiences

• For 500 Robux, users can upload a video thumbnail to their game.
• Users can pay to access certain games with varying prices set by the game's developer.
• Users can purchase passes and developer products for specific games at varying prices set by the game developer.
• Some private server subscriptions require paying Robux, whose price varies with the chosen game.
• For 100 Robux, users could have created a badge for their game.
  • As of February 24, 2022, you no longer need Robux to create a badge. You can create up to 10 badges per 30 days (200 per 30 days if the user is ID verified, every badge after will cost 100 Robux) on a single Game.

Items and Assets

• For 2,000 Robux, users can upload a video to their inventory.
• Users can purchase items in the marketplace for varying amounts of Robux from 2 to 999,999,999 Robux.
• For 10 Robux, users can upload Classic Shirts and Classic Pants.
• Before the Audio Update from March 2022, users could upload an audio file to the Creator Store, with costs ranging from 20 Robux to 350 Robux depending on the audio's length.
  • The uploading of audio to Roblox has since been made free, having a limit of 10 to 10,000 uploads per month.

Communities

• For 100 Robux, users can create a community.
  • Formerly, for 25 Robux, group owners can create a new rank for their community, but it is now free.
  • For 25 Robux, one can buy the cheapest paid access game.
  • Before the new group layout, for 500 Robux, group owners could have created a clan for their community. Clans have since been removed.
  • Formerly, only Builders Club (replaced by Roblox Premium) members could create communities.
  • For 100 Robux, communities can be renamed.

Website

• Users can exchange Robux for a minimum of 10 Ad Credits at the rate of 285 Robux for 1 Credit.
• For 1,000 Robux, users can change their username.

Exchanging Robux

Exchange Rate

The current exchange rate from Robux to USD is 0.0035 cents per 1 Robux, and the amount of Robux able to be purchased per one USD cent is set at a base rate of 0.8.

Currency Exchange

With the November 2008 release of the Robux currency exchange, players were given the ability to exchange Tix into Robux and vice-versa.^[18] Roblox's exchange rate was based on user demand and typically hovered around 1 Robux for about 20 Tickets for market orders, although this method usually yields very little Robux, and the daily Tickets weren't enough to earn even 1 Robux in the last few days of system. However, on April 14, 2016, the currency exchange was shut down following the removal of Tix.

Developer's Exchange

The Developer's Exchange (shortened as DevEx) was released on October 1, 2013. This feature allows developers who meet specific qualifications to exchange Robux into real-life currency every month. To qualify for DevEx, you have to be a community member in good standing, having earned over 30,000 Robux, have a valid Devex Portal account, and be verified by email. Currently, developers earn US$105 per 30,000 Robux exchanged through DevEx.

• On January 31, 2022, the minimum amount of Robux earned was lowered from 100,000 Robux to 50,000 Robux as well and as users now no longer need an active Premium subscription.^[19]

Exchanging Credit

Since October 2019, leftover credit acquired from Roblox cards can be converted into Robux in the Billing tab under Settings on the Roblox website. The conversion uses the rate of US$1 note per 1 Robux.

Robux scams

Robux is most often acquired by directly purchasing it on the Roblox website because most players cannot earn it or do not earn enough via developer products or other goods to obtain the items they want on the platform. As a result of this, many players who have never spent any real-life currency or have only spent a small amount on Roblox often resort to begging. Some malicious users attempt to scam users to take their Robux or other valuable assets (including the account itself).

Scam bots

Scam bots were bots programmed by an individual or group seeking account access to gain personal information such as passwords or to take assets from the account. Many of the bots have followed users all with similar bios and avatars. Most have been terminated but there are still more. They are most commonly found in games and the comment sections of items. Scam games have also been created by bots in an attempt to convince users to provide the scammer with their account passwords. These often include a fake player list with Roblox staff on the list to trick users into believing the game is legitimate. They join a game, with a non-Robux skin and a randomly generated username, examples are aBqqR157U or cL4iMBuXn0wfR33, etc. They type in their scam website in the chat and quickly leave afterwards. There is typically no use reporting them because there are too many. Most of these websites ask you for your username and password, or they ask you to perform a survey so the scammers can make money. Don't go to these websites or type in any information whatsoever. These websites are also unsecured, meaning that they could gain access to even more personal information without your knowledge.

Scam bots have also been known to formerly use the official "/me" chat command in Roblox games to convince users that they received Robux from a scam website. Due to this, the /me command was disabled by default in all Roblox games on May 17, 2019.^[20]

They also used "{Server}:" at the beginning of their messages to convince users that the server was encouraging the use of the website.

As of now, the amount of scam bots has decreased, and Roblox has started to ban any game and user that is programmed to scam.

Bot Hackers

In most of the popular games on Roblox where there's a money system to get expensive items, such as Murder Mystery 2 or Pet Simulator, there will be most likely a bot hacking and grinding door rate pets. Roblox has yet to completely remove these bots who sell rare items on websites.

Robux value

The value of Robux has decreased significantly since its initial release. With 3,297 Robux, a Roblox blog article once declared Miked as the wealthiest Roblox player. Today, many users have much more than this without being considered as wealthy by the community. This is largely because new Robux is generated every time a user earns a monthly stipend from their Premium membership or purchases it directly from Roblox, which in turn contributes to the currency's inflation as an ever-growing amount of players continue to desire goods or features that cost Robux.

Current theories about the dramatic shift in Robux value are embedded in the idea of supply and demand. Supply and demand are typically inversely related, and the balance of both establishes the equilibrium price. For example, by selling most of their items in the avatar shop for Robux and incentivizing users to exchange Robux for real-life currency through the Developer's Exchange system, the demand for Robux has increased. This increase in demand compared to a minimal increase in the supply of Robux creates a deficit of Robux.

According to the Developer's Exchange system, 1 Robux equals US 0.35 cents, while the official Robux purchase system and the leftover currency exchange system say 1 Robux equals US 1.25 cents.

As of March 2022, Robux is worth more than the Russian ruble due to sanctions against Russia by the international community in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine.^[21]

Purchase decreases

On July 12, 2019, the Builders Club bonus for each Robux purchase option was reduced to only 10% of the non-membership Robux, the $24.95 option replaced by a new $19.95 option for 1,700 Robux (1,870 with Builders Club) and the $199.95 option removed. It is speculated that this was to be able to pay developers more. However, many users were disappointed with this change as it means they will have to pay more real-life currency to receive the same amount of Robux as before.

Early 2019 icon replacement

Sometime in early 2019, an image of a new icon was found in the Roblox client files. The file was named robux@2x.png. Many users began to speculate that Robux would be replaced with another currency, while others believed only the icon would change. Roblox accidentally leaked the new Robux icon at the RDC 2019 event, and in response to a question regarding whether Robux would be replaced with another currency entirely, they stated that it would remain as Robux.^[22]

Later on, in November, the new icon was split into three colours: black, grey, and a yellow to gold gradient.^[23]

In the same month, it began to appear for random users as part of A/B testing. By the end of the month, it was enabled for all users.^[24]

The new icon has received controversy from many users, some stating that the icon has no resemblance to Robux,^[25][26][27] while others believe that it resembles a "lug nut" rather than any form of currency. Only a few stated that it was for the better, because the old Robux icon may be confused with the real-world currency, the Brazilian real, which uses the symbol R$.^[28]

Late 2025 icon replacement

Sometime in November, 2025, the Robux icon inside the Roblox client has been changed into a new one. It had a black, gray, and a yellow to gold gradient variation, following an attempt to update all Iconography on the Roblox app.

The change doesn't affect the website yet, but the Robux Store had the new icon, until Roblox reverted it for an unknown reason. That's not the case for the Robux Store in the mobile app.

• On August 11, 2019, some users noticed a different icon assumed to be meant for Robux in the files of Roblox Studio, called clb_robux_20.png^[29]. It is a Roblox icon in a circle. The icon has not seen any use.
• Despite the icon change, as of January 2024, multiple old "R$" icons can still be found in the Roblox client files.
• When viewing a banned account, or when the Roblox site is experiencing problems, the Robux icon will display "?".
• In 2007, Robux was typically shortened down to RO$.^[30]
• In early 2021, Roblox partially rolled out a clothing fee^[31], requiring users to pay a 50 Robux fee to upload a Shirt or pants or make their T-shirt go on sale, which was later lowered to 10 Robux.^[32]

• You could formerly get more Robux by redeeming a gift card instead of buying Robux straight from the website. This was patched after Roblox began denominating gift cards in the user's country of residence.
• Since April 2023, Robux was no longer denominated in US Dollars, but in your local currency.
