An event is an officially created limited-time challenge that usually involves different objectives and has different limited-time rewards that cannot be obtained after the event ends. (Unless the item becomes limited, such as the Riptide, which rarely happens.) Roblox events are commonly sponsored events where new movies or brands, have limited-time events associated or themed with their product.

They were replaced with Developer Events on May 13, 2019. Events were brought back on Roblox again for the Egg Hunt 2020 as of January 11, 2020, according to a Roblox tweet about the Egg Hunt 2020: Agents of E.G.G.

Types of events

Criticism

Roblox events have been criticized because of there being too many Developer-made events, also known as Dev-ents (or Dev-Hunts for the more recent egg hunts) in the Roblox Community. These developer-made events have been criticized because of the lack of effort put into the events as well as Roblox not making their own specific experience for these events, instead of using experiences made by the community and adding earnable items to them. They also have been heavily criticized because of the items having bad objectives to get them.

Some developers reported stressful crunch times and low pay when developing for the events.[1]

Although this complaint has recently simmered down in 2022 due to there being good sponsored events, a lot of sponsored events are quick cash grabs that are often broken at launch. This is especially true for LuoBu events.

History

Discontinuation

On April 2, 2019, Roblox announced that they were replacing monthly and seasonal events with developer-made content to boost developer experiences' concurrent visitors. This was heavily criticized due to events being a long-time tradition on Roblox. Along with this, Roblox had announced that they were no longer giving out prizes for these developer-made experiences. This change took effect from May 13, 2019[2] to November 21, 2019.

Comeback

On January 11, 2020, Roblox confirmed in a tweet that the Egg Hunt would be returning for 2020, which led to some speculations that other events could be returning as well, which was later confirmed with RB Battles Season 2 and Ready Player Two (although events will not be as common as they were in the pre-discontinuation era).

Rework into Events Platform

Although new events continue to be produced and released, the event tab on the sidebar was discontinued in February 2023, after having last been used in October 2022 with FIFA World, However, it was brought back on March 12, 2024, to promote "The Hunt: First Edition", and later events, When the event finish, the event tab on sidebar is removed temporarily, when event is not available.[3] In March 2023, the Events Platform was added to replace the previous event tab.[4] The Events Platform holds community events that do not award accessories. With this new events system, places can schedule the start and end time for an event, and any player can subscribe to events they wish to participate in.

UGC Limited events as de facto replacement

The introduction of UGC Limited items and the ability to sell them within experiences has allowed users to host events and distribute UGC, usually as free items, themselves. The first free limited UGC events began appearing in June 2023. As many developers consider limited UGC events a more convenient alternative to getting Roblox's approval to distribute UGCs as regular, unlimited quantity free items alongside Roblox themselves no longer offering developers unlimited quantity free items, the practice of hosting free limited UGC events has become much more common and replaced almost all events containing regular free prizes since August 2023.

Revival

In early 2024, official events were revived officially with the release of The Hunt: First Edition. These events usually air once or twice per season, and would occasionally be tech demos for new Roblox features as shown with The Haunt and The Hatch.

The event system follows the formula of having a selection of tasks to do in participating games, and using the points to redeem items. There is also usually a deluxe counterpart of each free item which can be obtained by owning a battlepass, or buying the item individually. A special bundle available throughout the event will contain the deluxe pass for free. There is no official term for the format, but due to most of them following the naming pattern of "The (Word)", the conjectural name of the collective event format is "The Series".
